Borderline Insanity

As she walked down the grand staircase all eyes in the room turned towards her. Her hair was tied up, a few curls bouncing freely from their binds. Her beautiful neck and shoulders bare, save a delicate necklace dangling freely. The strapless blood red dress fit her perfectly as it flowed down her body. Stopping above her knees, it showed just enough leg to catch every males attention. Yet still had enough class to have every female gasp at her beauty. One pair of gray eyes seemed to intensify as the goddess made her way towards the stunned crowd. Though he made no move to meet her.

A blue haired man, dressed in his evening ware, smiled as he bowed slightly to her. “You look rather stunning, -chan. Though I don’t believe that is the attire that he picked for you to wear.”

The woman bowed her head back slightly and kept her beautiful smile in place. “Oh, but I am sure you both knew by now what was going to happen. If he would have asked me politely to wear something, I might have at least given it some thought. However, the moment he tells me to do something, the more inclined I am to piss him off by completely ignoring his request.”

“Well, I’m glad you could join us, .” Atobe smiled and slide his hand around her waist. “There are people I must introduce you too.”

Nodding she allowed him to lead her away, knowing by his mannerism that he was rather annoyed. She put her smile back on her face as they approached a group a men, all a few years older than themselves.

“Ah, Atobe-san. Who is this?” A slightly older gentleman smiled at the two.

Atobe turned to his companion. “This is my girlfriend, .” Turning back to the men before him he smirked. “Seems she decided on the fashionably late entrance.”

Chuckling the men turned their attention to the woman. “Well, it was a rather fashionable entrance, if I do say so.” He took up her hand and kissed it, the look in his eyes playful.

The woman giggled and coyly pulled her hand back when he let go. “I believe any woman would like all eyes to be on her once in a while.”

The men laughed at this, as Atobe controlled himself not to scrawl.

He pinned her against the wall and leaned down nibbling on her ear. “Do not play this game with me .” He leaned further lightly kissing her neck he growled, “Don’t play…”

Her eyes softened and she calmed her breathing.

He all but buried his face in her neck as he kept her pinned to the wall. “Just don’t play.” His voice was low and threatening.

pushed him back. Atobe was taken back by this and even more so as he looked upon the woman. Her face was down and her eyes nearly closed. “Do you think I’m some whore?”

Atobe frowned. “Of course not.”

“Then do you distrust me so much?” Atobe didn’t answer. ’s head shot up and if her back wasn’t against a wall already, she would of backed up. Those intense gray eyes told her everything. That was it, he held no trust for her. She nodded and dried her eyes of the few tears the had managed to escape. She turned to walk back into the ballroom. “The guest will be wondering where their host is. We shouldn’t keep them waiting.”

Atobe reached for her arm, grabbing her wrist. “…” His voice was stern and warning.

She tugged her arm free. “The point has been made clear Keigo. Come now, we aren’t children.” She continued her walk, he took a few steps and came beside her as the two reentered the hall.

She stood beside him as he talked to business, and potential business partners. She smiled and tolerated his arm around her waist. She even took a step away when a cute younger blonde came and asked him for a dance. Recognizing her as one of his older, more important partners daughters, she smiled as he agreed and led her away.

resisted the urge to scream, cry and glare at the two as they swept over the dance floor. Even managed to smile a beautiful smile as he made his way back to her. He stood beside her and attempted to pull her close again. That, however, she was no longer willing to put up with. He looked at her oddly and smirked. Leaning down he took her hand and whispered in her ear. “Would you like to dance?”

Removing her hand and smiling, a hell freezing smile, and took a step away from him. Keeping her voice low and pleasant she watched the remaining dancers. “No thank you, I don’t very much appreciate secondhand.” Atobe’s eyebrows frowned and he coughed about to comment. However turned to him, smile still in place. “I believe I’m going to turn in, suddenly I feel terrible sick.” A bow of her head was all she left him with as she made her way back up the grand staircase.

When she reached their room she didn’t spare a second. Her dress was unzipped and dropped on the ground, her heels kicked off in much the same fashion. She made haste as she collected her things and piled them into any bag she could find. The longest she took was when she took a piece of paper and pen, taking a few minutes to write her thoughts. She placed the folded page on the pillow of the bed and left the room.

She walked down the back stairwell and towards the front door. She could still hear the buzzing from the ballroom. Sighing she reached for the handle.

“Is there anything to stop you from going?” A smooth voice filled the darkness.

Her hand gripped the door handle as she thought it over.

The dark haired man from earlier stepped into the dull light. “I believe he does love you.”

“Does he?” She looked up staring at the door, as if it held all the answers. “I love him, more than anything. I’d stand beside him through hell and back. I’d trust him with my life.” She looked back at him sadly. “However, nothing one way can ever work.” She opened the door and took one step out. “Without his trust this fragile relationship is already broken.” She whispered as she made her way down the front steps and into the cab that waited for her.

The man closed the door behind her and sighed. “I know.”

:::::::::::::::::::::

Atobe sighed as he closed the door behind his final guest to leave. He made his way up the stairs groaning. It had been hours since he first started to think of going to bed, now he could. As he neared his bedroom door, his steps seemed to get heavier. Now he would have to deal with other matters. was upset, again, and he would have to settle that before he could get an ounce of sleep. Taking a deep breath he opened the door, ready and waiting for the rant to come.

Silence…

He opened his eyes to an empty room. Glancing around he entered, he didn’t hear the water running. So she wasn’t in the adjacent bathroom. He raised an eyebrow and preceded to get ready for bed. As he readied himself to climb into the covers he noticed the folded white paper on the pillow. Rolling his eyes he set it on the night stand.

Again, had gotten angry, at God knows what.
Again, she had left to cool her head, God knows where.
Again, she had written a note telling him not to worry, God knows why.

He got comfy and closed his eyes, ready for another days sleep. She’d be back tomorrow and everything will figure itself out. It always does.

:::::::::::::::::::::

Rubbing his forehead Atobe sighed. Putting down his pen he pushed the documents away from himself. Tapping his temple he frowned. had never stayed away for five days. One, yes, by two she called but three she was always back. ‘Surely she would of cooled her head by now.’ He thought, but that didn’t help the nagging feeling that tugged at his heart. Something wasn’t right but he tried his best to ignore it. Deciding he should turn in for the night he turned off the light to his study and let his feet take him towards his room.

Empty…

He wondered why it felt so cold. hadn’t been around long and before her it was always only him. ‘Plus, if couldn’t handle being his, then surely he’d just go back to his numerous woman.’ He also ignored the voice in the back of his mind that clearly said, ‘no I couldn’t’. He threw off his clothes and climbed into bed. As he turned to shut off his bedside lamp his eyes caught onto a familiar folded white paper.

He reached for it but pulled his hand back as if it were hot to the touch. Shaking his head he plucked up the page and began to unfold it. Suddenly he felt sickened, as if this single page held something he never wished to see. Something that he had been steadily ignoring. Finally opening the note he immediately recognized the writing. However, her normally elegant and neat handwriting looked rushed and shaken.

His eyes focused as he swallowed the lump in his throat. He read,

By now you have entered you room only to realize it is empty.
No trace of my presence lingers within the walls.

You will prepare for bed and vaguely dismiss it as me being angry. You will declare to yourself that you had warned me the liability of being your one and only. That you told me of the dangers I will face by being by your side. You will sleep soundly rationalizing that everything will work itself out.

Though days will pass and possibly your mind will wander more, because I have still not returned.

I wonder if more than just your bed is empty.
I wonder if you realize it is not empty because of the reasons you thought.

Your bed is not empty because I wasn’t prepared for the pain or the struggle to be yours.
Nor was it because you were flirted with, and possibly flirted back.
The sheets have not gone cold because I did not love you enough.
Nor because I didn’t trust you.
It is not empty because I did not think I could live up to being your lover.
Because the emptiness does not lie within me.

When you warned me of being your only woman, I didn’t hesitate to except.
I now wonder if you, Keigo, knew what this proposed for yourself.
You were to be with only me
To care and love me
To cry and smile beside me
To feel for me like you felt for no other
To look at only me with those eyes filled with such emotion
You were to trust me.

You who have only given trust to those small few
You who have never seen woman as anything as a pleasure sport.
Was it too much to ask for you to except me as more?

That day you asked me if I was ready, if I would be able to handle such responsibility.
Were you truly authorized to ask me such questions?

Nothing one-way can work and I am far too stubborn and too proud to stand beside a man that thinks so little of me.

Yours,

No heart waits forever.

Atobe let the paper fall from his hands. His mind slowly processed all he just read. “…isn’t…coming…back…” His own voice sounded odd in his ears. He bowed his head and held it in his hands. This couldn’t be happening. He shook his head, hoping he’d wake up and it would all be a dream.

Suddenly he began to laugh to himself uncontrollably. ‘This was fine, this was perfect.’ He thought to himself. ‘I will just go back to how it was before she demanded me for herself. Plenty of woman, different ones every time. No strings, just fun meaningless meetings.’ His eyes landed on the letter that still sat on his blanket in his lap. Then they flickered to the door, back to the letter, back to the door. What was this feeling? Wishing the letter would poof into smoke and she would come smiling through his door again. His eyes finally fixated on the door.

Slowly he stood from his bed and even more slowly he pulled his pants back on. Looking back up at the door he grabbed a button up shirt and put it on. As he looked down and started on the first button, his head snapped up, eyes wide staring at the door. This was real. had left, she wasn’t coming back. All pride and dignity flew out of him as he ran to the door swung it open and preceded to run out of the house. He ran into his car and sped off, towards ’s flat. He wasn’t going to lose her. “I can’t…”

:::::::::::::::::::::

He hastily parked his car and quickly made his way into the building. He was a mess, his hair wasn’t done, his shirt was left open, luckily he was smart enough to throw on shoes before he rushed out of his house. He entered the elevator and watched as he went up and each floor number lit up. What was he going to say? His mind was slowly coming back to him. How could he let her feel so unloved, so unwanted? He leaned his head against the wall and closed his eyes. His . How could he lose HIS ! The doors finally opened and he rushed out and towards the door of her room. As the room came into sight he felt his heart flutter and his steps quicken. Reaching it he didn’t hesitate to knock, repeatedly.

As the door opened, before he could sigh in relief, he froze.

“Can I help you?” An older man asked.

Atobe looked above the man into the apartment. “Empty…”

Looking behind himself the old man nodded. “Yes, the tenant left earlier, had all of her things sent to storage.” Looking back at the messy looking young lad the old man frowned. “Was a pity -chan was one of my best residents. Did you know her?”

Atobe would of surely fallen to the ground if he didn’t have those quick reflexes. He grabbed the door frame and steadied himself. “She’s gone?” His eyes seemed unfocused and lost.

The old man frowned further at the state of the youth before him. The young man seemed confused and utterly lost. Then it dawned on him. “You wouldn’t happened to be Atobe Keigo would you?” The older man in the apartment asked.

Atobe dumbly nodded.

“Oh, I was asked to give this to you if you arrived by tonight.” He pulled out a envelope with Atobe Keigo written on the front and handed it to the younger man.

Looking down at another white piece of paper Atobe reached out and gently took it. “Where did she go?” His voice was completely drowned in pain.

“She didn’t mention, maybe it’s in there.” The old man pointed to what he just gave Atobe. Nodding again Atobe just stared at the envelope. “Well, I’m sorry son. I was just checking the room and was about to lock up.” He stepped out as Atobe stepped back and closed the door. Locking it the old man went to leave. Taking another look back at the distraught young man he sighed. “All lovers that are meant to be will find away back to each other. No matter how hard they try to stay apart.” With that the old man vanished into the elevator.

:::::::::::::::::::::

Atobe sat in his car outside of ’s old building. In his hand the letter the old man had given him over an hour ago. He couldn’t leave his spot, he couldn’t open the letter. Doing so meant this was all real. was gone. She had really left him and he had lost that smile. He leaned back in his seat and stared at the roof of the car.

In his mind he ran through all of the things she had mentioned in her pervious letter. She was right in a sense. Maybe he wasn’t ready for what their relationship had become. Maybe he couldn’t handle being with only one. He laughed bitterly. ‘What a joke.’ His eyes landed on the letter again. He wanted her. Only her. The thought of other woman disgusted him.

None of them would have her laugh. None of them would have her touch. None of them would have her voice, her eyes, her mouth, her body. None of them would have her mind, her attitude, her strength, her weakness. None of them would consume his mind and heart. He wouldn’t be able to hold any of them like he had her. He wouldn’t be able to be himself, he wouldn’t be able to trust any of them.

‘None of them would be her!’

He took a deep breath as he finally realized something extremely important. “I wouldn’t be able to love anyone like this…”

He tore back the edge of the envelope and pulled free its contents.

:::::::::::::::::::::

Atobe pushed his way through the crowds of people. He could see the sun peeking over the horizon and he looked around for the time.

‘6:56.’

He had to make it! He panicked and pushed harder at those blocking his path. Four minutes. The flight was in four minutes! He clutched the paper in his hands. The only thing written on it was a flight number, an airport and a time.

“Flight 493...Last call for flight 493 passengers.” Atobes heart stopped at the sound of the voice of the speakers. He wasn’t going to make it! He still had to get all the way over to the other side of the airport.

:::::::::::::::::::::

sat in her first class seat waiting for the plane to take off. She wouldn’t cry, she knew he wouldn’t come. But she couldn’t help but hope, hope that he did love her, that he did want her. Yet here she was, less than two minutes till take off. The doors on the plane had already been closed and the stewards already started making their first checks. Taking a few deep breaths she calmed herself. She would not cry…

A few minutes past and the passengers watched as a few of the stewards huddled together whispering. After a moment or two the captain came on the intercom. “We are sorry to announce there will be a slight…delay in take off.” There was silence for a minute then it came back on. “We are sure it wont be long, thank you for your patience.” The passengers all turned to each other, looking a bit confused. Then a few jumped when the hatch to the plane opened and the flight attendants began to talk to someone outside of it.

Suddenly ’s heart stopped.

“Who do you think you are talking too?”

‘That voice…’ shook her head. ‘No it can’t be…’

“The quicker you get out of my way and allow me to do what I need to. The faster you can get your plane off the ground.” The voice sounded annoyed but stern. A head stewardess pulled the one blocking the entrance away.

Atobe stepped onto the plane and his eyes quickly found his intended target. Many of the other passengers looked at the man oddly as he made his way down the aisle. just stared at him, unable to break eye contact. ‘What is he doing here?’

He stopped next to her seat, crossed his arms and looked down at her. “Where do you think you’re going?” She opened her mouth but nothing came out. He leaned down each hand on an arm rest as he came face to face with her. His eyes softened as he gently placed his lips on hers. Sighing she leaned into it as he settled one of his hands on the back of her neck. Pulling her gently up to stand he deepened the kiss. A few passengers blushed at the passion and intensity of the two kissing.

Atobe pulled back and smirked at the dazed look on ’s face. Kissing her cheek he smirked. “You think I’d let you go?” His voice held so much emotion couldn’t stop the tears that fell from her eyes. And before she even had time to think he bent his knees, wrapped his arms around her waist and hoisted her in the air. He turned and walked back up the aisle towards the slightly stunned attendants. “Thank you. I’ll be taking this one…” He walked off the plane and only glanced back once. “You can just send any of her luggage back here afterwards. They will be told where to send it.”

felt more tears fall as she buried her head into his neck. “You’re late idiot…” She mumbled, wrapping her arms around his neck.

He gently rubbed her back as he walked through the tunnel back towards the airports main building. “No, I just decided on making a fashionably late entrance.” laughed as he carried her through the main building.

Atobe smiled and held her just a little tighter. ‘This…’ He thought. ‘This is borderline insanity…’ His smile grew as the many occupants of the airport looked at the two oddly. “Hm…so this is love.”
